Technology and Economic Opportunity
Technology has the power to be the greatest equalizer in human history. But only if we build it with intention.
The Access Gap
The innovation economy has created extraordinary wealth — but that wealth has been concentrated in a small number of people, companies, and communities. Entire industries and communities have been left behind, not because they lack talent or ambition, but because they lack access to the tools and capital that drive economic growth.
Barbershops are a perfect example. The barbershop industry generates billions in revenue every year. It employs hundreds of thousands of people. It's the economic backbone of communities across the country. Yet until recently, most barbershops were running on pen and paper, with no access to the kind of technology that other industries take for granted.
Building for the Underserved
At Squire, we made a deliberate choice to build for an underserved market. Not because it was the easiest path, but because it was the most impactful one. When you give a barbershop owner the same quality of technology that a Fortune 500 company has, you don't just improve their business — you improve their livelihood, their employees' livelihoods, and the economic health of their entire community.
The Role of Founders
Founders have an outsized ability to shape the future. The markets we choose to serve, the products we build, the teams we hire — these decisions have ripple effects that extend far beyond our companies.
I believe the next generation of great technology companies will be built by founders who see opportunity where others see limitations. Founders who build for communities that have been overlooked. Founders who measure success not just in revenue, but in impact.
A Call to Action
If you're a founder, an investor, or a technologist, I challenge you to think about who your work serves. Are you building for the people who already have everything? Or are you building for the people who need it most?
The biggest opportunities in technology aren't in building the next social media app or the next crypto token. They're in bringing world-class technology to the industries and communities that have been waiting for it.
That's the future I'm building toward. And I hope you'll join me.
